Turkish Mathematical Society

The Turkish Mathematical Society (TMS), founded in 1948 under the leadership of Kerim Erim by distinguished scientists working at Istanbul University and Istanbul Technical University, is a non-profit organization. Its main objective is to ensure the advancement and nationwide augmentation of mathematics and related disciplines, to increase the contribution of mathematics and mathematicians in economic, social, and technological fields, and to enhance the appeal, level, and effectiveness of mathematics education in secondary and higher education.

Until 1995, the Turkish Mathematical Society was the sole institution professionally representing and bringing together mathematicians in Türkiye. It has hundreds of members from all over the country. The Society represents Türkiye in the International Mathematical Union (IMU), the European Mathematical Society (EMS), and the Southeastern European Mathematical Society (MASSEE). It has been a full member of the IMU since 1960 and of the EMS since 2008. The Society’s headquarters are in Istanbul. Its Ankara Branch, which was established in 1999, ceased its activities in 2024 after operating for 25 years.

The Society provides nationwide resources and activities that foster professional growth and cooperation among researchers, academics, teachers, and students. To this end, the TMS organizes annual national symposiums in different regions of the country. So far, 37 symposia have been held at fifteen different Turkish universities. Each year, hundreds of academics attend these symposia to collaborate on research and benefit from lectures presented by researchers who are selectively invited by a scientific advisory committee. Through the organization of special sessions, young researchers are given the opportunity to present their theses, providing a professional platform for discussing their ideas.

Workshops and Summer Schools supporting graduate students are organized or their organization is supported. In addition, the TMD provides scholarships each year to undergraduate students selected by a fellowship committee upon application. Since 2013, it has been supporting high-level mathematical events under the name “Mathematics Research Friend” and the activities of undergraduate student clubs through the Youth Fund.

We influence institutional and public policy by emphasizing the need for the application of mathematics in other fields. Moreover, we promote a general understanding and appreciation of mathematics. We offer monthly seminars that appeal to a general audience for the benefit of educators and students.

The TMS publishes a quarterly mathematical magazine, Matematik Dünyası, which captures public interest and sells over 10,000 copies per issue. The magazine is designed to encourage students of all ages to pursue activities and careers in the mathematical sciences. Successive issues are dedicated to specific subjects, covering contemporary advancements in mathematics.

IMAGINARY

IMAGINARY is a platform for open and interactive mathematics. It features a variety of content that can be used in schools, at home, in museums, at exhibitions or for events and media activities. The main contents of IMAGINARY are its interactive programs and its picture galleries.

The platform allows an easy integration of new content, for example of additional mathematical subjects or exhibitions. One main goal ofIMAGINARY is to enable you, the community, to participate and to get involved with your own ideas. The core idea is that exhibits are created within the community and exhibitions are organized independently.
